Choosing your next tool
Compare the stage of the design process
Finch combines building data, circulation and unit-mix generation, adaptive plan libraries, and BIM handoff. The strongest alternatives depend on the next decision your team needs to make. Site feasibility, environmental analysis, and direct geometric modeling are related tasks, but they are not interchangeable.
Comparison of architectural workflows
| Option | Relevant purpose | Difference from Finch | Access to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autodesk Forma Site Design | Early site and massing studies | Site context and environmental analysis | Paid Autodesk access and trial options |
| TestFit | Real estate feasibility and site planning | Site layout and deal evaluation | Vendor pricing and demonstration |
| SketchUp | Direct 3D design and presentation | General geometric modeling rather than Finch's unit-plan generation | Free web entry and paid subscriptions |
| Miro | Team option review | Visual collaboration rather than architectural geometry generation | Free entry and paid plans |
Forma and TestFit for early feasibility
Autodesk Forma Site Design is relevant when site context, building massing, and environmental performance are central to the study. Finch also documents a Forma integration, so the two can form a connected workflow: develop volumes in Forma, then explore floor plates and units in Finch. Check Autodesk's product scope when choosing access.
TestFit emphasizes real estate feasibility, editable site layouts, unit and parking considerations, and deal-related comparisons. It is worth evaluating when the main question is whether a development opportunity works at the site and deal level. Bring the same brief and assumptions to both demonstrations so the comparison has a consistent basis.
SketchUp for direct modeling
SketchUp provides a broader environment for drawing and exploring three-dimensional geometry. It can suit designers who want to shape a model directly and develop a presentation workflow around that geometry. It does not provide the same reason to choose Finch's plan-library and unit-generation system. Finch's current FAQ also says SketchUp is not a supported integration, so do not assume a direct transfer path.
Miro for discussion alongside the model
Miro can support collaborative review of alternatives, briefs, and annotated plans. It is an adjacent tool for the decision process rather than a replacement for Finch's building generation. Its visual collaboration workspace may help a distributed team organize the questions that still need resolution. Keep authoritative geometry in the design model and connect the review notes to identifiable variants.
